The Proven Habit that will Zap Food Cravings


Insatiable food cravings are the bane of an emotional eater's existence. They come on strong and without warning, filling you with an urgency to eat ASAP. The food of choice is usually comfort food. And the results are usually the same: Temporary relief followed by guilt, shame, regret and self-loathing.

Not to mention weight gain.

Some emotional eaters experience food cravings multiple times a day, everyday. Others only at specific times or when triggered by specific events or people. Regardless, living with these kinds of food cravings becomes debilitating: Food is the master, the emotional eater the slave.

The majority of these lashings we call food cravings are in actual fact stressful emotions like loneliness, hopelessness or past trauma that you, the emotional eater, cannot face or haven't yet been able to identify. You've become accustomed to eating whenever difficult feelings arise as a way to distract or numb yourself.

And so your "emotional hunger" persists.

Do this long enough and you won't even realize that you're doing it anymore; you'll simply notice that you're hungry a lot of the time. And eating.


So, what's the proven habit that will zap these kinds of food cravings?

One word: Pausing.

Pause each time a food craving strikes and ask yourself "WHY do I want to eat?" instead of "WHAT do I want to eat?" Then give yourself the actual time required to come up with an answer. Many of you will realize that you're not eating out of biological hunger but rather emotional hunger. And although you may yet not know the source of your emotional hunger, you soon will if you practice the pause and keep digging.

Pausing also short circuits your cravings simply by keeping them at bay long enough that the urge to eat passes. Your brain is too busy focusing on problem solving to be concerned with eating. Pausing before you give in to a food craving is the proven habit to zap food cravings. And the more often you pause, the more insights you gain, and the further you'll get away from emotional eating.
